Sandersville is governed by part-time mayor, a mayor pro tem and four councilmen who are elected by post with day-to-day management responsibilities handled by an appointed city clerk. The mayor and mayor pro tem are elected at large.
The estimated population in 2017 was 5,571, just under the official 2010 census count. The city covers total area of 10.2 square miles. As of the census of 2010, there were 2,245 households in the city. Of the total population, 36.9 percent of people are white, 62.3 percent are black, 0.4 percent are Hispanic or Latino, 0.5 percent are Asian and 0.3 percent claimed mixed heritage.
