Washington County Level 1 Drought Response

Washington County  Level 1 Drought Response

Washington County remains in a Level 1 drought response. A Level 1 Drought Response requires water utilities to educate customers about drought conditions and the need to conserve water. There are currently no odd-even restrictions on outdoor water use, but residents should take steps to conserve water and are reminded to abide by the state’s permanent year-round outdoor watering restrictions, which limits outdoor watering to before 10 a.m. and after 4 p.m. daily to avoid the hottest part of the day when more evaporation occurs.

Ways to Conserve Water:

•         Always turn taps off tightly so they do not drip.
•         Promptly repair any leaks in and around your taps. (One leak can waste several thousand gallons of water per year.)
•         When hand-washing dishes, never run water continuously. Wash dishes in a partially filled sink and then rinse them using the spray attachment on your tap.
•         When brushing your teeth, turn the water off while you are actually brushing. Use short burst of water for cleaning your brush. (This saves about 80% of the water normally used.)
•         When washing or shaving, partially fill the sink and use that water rather than running the tap continuously. (This save about 60% of the water normally used.) Use short burst of water to clean razors.
•         You can reduce water usage by 40% to 50% by installing low-flush toilets.

Watering Which is Exempt:

     For example, the following activities may be done at any time of day under a Level 1 Drought Response:

Irrigation of personal food gardens may be done at any time of day;
Irrigation of new and replanted plant, seed, or turf may be done at any time of day for 30 days after installation;
Drip irrigation or irrigation using soaker hoses may be done at any time of day; and
Hand watering with a hose with automatic cutoff or handheld container may be done at any time of day.
