Use of Paper Products in Sewer Systems

We would like to caution our citizens on the use of baby wipes and disinfecting wipes.  Please do not put these items down your toilet.  Even if the item states that it is a “flushable wipe”, it really isn’t.  These items do not break down in the sewer system the same as toilet tissue. Toilet tissues are made to breakdown rapidly in the sewer system while these “wipes” are not.  They will clog your sewer system and even more so, they will clog the pumps and collection system of the city’s sewer treatment system.  This will lead to spills and contamination at a time when we are battling the coronavirus pandemic.  They are not degradable as well as tissue in your septic tanks and can create problems with your personal sewer system.

Please put these items in your trash can so that they can be properly disposed of without damaging your sewer system or causing a public health problem. Please, let’s all do our part in this time of need.
