County Manager appoints Armand Burnett, Athletic Director for Macon-Bibb County Parks & Recreation Department as the new Parks & Recreation Director for Macon County.

Mr. Burnett has had a very progressive career in Parks & Recreation with a strong background in program and activity organization. 

Macon County, Georgia, September 29, 2016:  

As of November 1, 2016, Macon County will have a new Parks & Recreation Director.  The former Recreation Director position was approved to be expanded to encompass oversight of Whitewater Creek Park.  With the improved park facility additional oversight was needed to help market the park and ensure proper maintenance and upkeep.  Armand Burnett currently works as the Special Event/Athletic Director for Macon-Bibb County Parks and Recreation Department. 


In his current and former capacity, Mr. Burnett has worked with youth athletics, summer activities, programs for senior and activities at Lake Tobesofkee.  During his interview, Mr. Burnett indicated that he was extremely familiar with many aspects of recreation from laying out the fields to developing programs.  He stated that in his previous job, “he had worked with youth, young and older adults and really wanted to involve the entire community in recreational activities.”


Mr. Burnett is a graduate of Savannah State University where he played basketball.  He has a wife and son and is heavily involved in youth activities in the community and with his church. 


The County received 19 applications for the position, many of which were from outside of the local area.  Interviews were conducted for 9 candidates by the County administration before a final selection was made.  Mr. Burnett will attend and upcoming worksession to meet with the County Commissioners. 


Recreation is a major part of the quality of life in any community and youth development and activities is a vital part of community health and education.  The new director will work to stabilize the program offerings and engage all areas of the community by exploring transportation issues and organizing a Recreation Advisory Board.  Anyone interested in volunteering, please contact the County Recreation Department.  


County Manager Regina McDuffie stated that “Mr. Burnett has a great amount of energy and enthusiasm and will bring a fresh approach and new ideas to the department.” Mr. Burnett currently resides in Byron, Georgia.
